How cool is this?  I just found a new online spreadsheet application that allows you to share, collaborate, and publish spreadsheets that actually work when they are posted on a website, or blog.  EditGrid received a very good rating from PC Magazine.  The concept is somewhat similar to what is already being done with the online spreadsheet applications of Google Docs, and Zoho.  However, the company focuses all of its efforts on the spreadsheet application solely, and apparently does a much better job at it, than either of its competitors.

My initial thought was, how could we put this to good use on the blog?  I am still currently working out many of the details (aka. climbing the learning curve) to see how everything works, and so far, I’ve got to tell you that I’m impressed.  I still need to figure out how to protect specific cells, so that a user can enter data, but other areas, such as the calculation cells are protected from accidental alteration.

EditGrid seems to do a pretty good job importing Excel spreadsheet, so any that you have already created will probably work without a lot of problems.  I have noticed that it can sometimes be slow to respond, but that is probably because of website traffic.  You can even sign up for a free 30-day trial to their premium subscription license.  It allows for a fully-functional account to see if it will work for you.  After the trial period, the company has three available services:  (1) Personal, which is free, (2) Subscription, for businesses and organizations, at $5/user/month, and (3) Licensing, no cost given.

You can now calculate on the internet!
